The senior special assistant on media and publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari, Shehu Garba, has come under attack for saying the president has treated all Nigerians equally since he assumed office in May 2015.
Garba, who in a series of tweets said to advise that Buhari’s government was deepening the division between Muslims and Christians is not only lie but also playing into the hands of the dreaded Boko Haram sect who wish to separate Nigerians along religious lines.
According to publication, he was responding to a recent article by the UK Telegraph, which claimed that the President Buhari-led administration is mainly targeting Christians and the opposition. Several Nigerians are of the opinion that Buhari’s decisions and appointments are in favour of the northerners and Muslims.
Recently, concerns were raised by Western aid officials about the way Nigerian government’s handling the boko haram crisis. It was reported that Britain’s Department for International Development contributes an estimated £870 million to Nigeria to support the government’s ability to fight Boko Haram. They alleged that Buhari is using some of the aid to torment Christian political rivals instead of tackling Islamist militants.
However, Garba ridiculed the report, saying the UK government does not give development aid to the Nigerian administration for use in military operations against Boko Haram.
